A Simple Beginning: Empowering Financial Independence

SalaryTea's story began with a simple yet profound mission: to help individuals and small businesses take control of their finances through accessible, user-friendly tools. Co-founders Natalie Brooks and Racheal Ssentongo, both driven by their backgrounds in engineering and personal experiences with financial challenges, saw an opportunity to empower others by making financial management simpler.

The Birth of SalaryTea: Campus to Business

It all started on a grassroots level. In January 2024, while still pursuing her master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics at Johns Hopkins University, Natalie began offering personalized financial consultations to fellow students. Many of these students were freelancers or young entrepreneurs, struggling to manage their income, expenses, and savings. In addition, students living in the city found it difficult to budget effectively due to high living costs, and they were eager to find solutions that worked for both personal and professional financial management.

Affordable Tools for Financial Literacy

Recognizing this need, Racheal, an aerospace engineer with a passion for financial literacy, joined Natalie in these efforts. Together, they developed a set of annual financial budget planners that allowed students and young entrepreneurs to effectively monitor their cash flow on a monthly basis while also tracking their expenses. These tools provided a clear, structured way to visualize their income and spending, helping users balance living costs while saving for the future. To make these planners accessible to everyone, they were priced affordably between $3 and $5, reflecting SalaryTea’s commitment to promoting economic equality through affordable financial tools. As word quickly spread about how helpful these planners were in simplifying financial management, more and more students began using them, and soon, SalaryTea was born.

Rapid Growth and Validation

By the end of October 2024, SalaryTea had received over 3,000 orders, generating more than $15,000 in sales. This initial success validated the demand for simple, affordable financial solutions and inspired Natalie and Racheal to continue expanding their offering.

From Financial Planning to Advanced Forecasting

A key transition came when Natalie leveraged her data science background and deep understanding of forecasting metric models to move beyond simple financial planners and integrate financial forecasting tools into SalaryTea’s offerings. This shift enabled the development of advanced tools that went beyond tracking current finances, allowing users to forecast future cash flow, sales, and profit and loss (P&L). With these models, users could now leverage powerful data insights to project their financial future, enabling better decision-making and long-term planning. This transition from basic financial planning to advanced forecasting marked a major turning point for SalaryTea, positioning the platform to offer the same types of projections and insights used by professionals on Wall Street.

SalaryTea’s Mission: Affordable AI Tools for Small Businesses

As Natalie Brooks explains, "We are forecasting metrics for small businesses using the same financial toolkit employed by Wall Street analysts. Our goal is to introduce AI-driven utility to everyday business owners for little to no cost." This encapsulates SalaryTea's mission to bring sophisticated financial tools, traditionally reserved for big corporations, to small businesses at a fraction of the cost.

Current Partnerships: Empowering Small Business Owners

Currently, SalaryTea is partnering with small business owners to help them project key metrics such as sales forecasting, profit and loss, and cash flow. By providing these insights, SalaryTea empowers business owners to make more informed decisions about their finances and scale their operations efficiently. SalaryTea firmly believes that all businesses, regardless of size or financial expertise, should have access to these critical insights with little to no cost, making financial literacy and independence more attainable for everyone.

Empowering the Next Generation of Entrepreneurs

A key aspect of SalaryTea’s mission is empowering Generation Z and Generation Alpha by fostering financial independence and literacy. In today’s rapidly evolving economy, these younger generations face unique challenges but also unparalleled opportunities. Financial literacy and independence are crucial for them to navigate a complex world of student loans, side hustles, and digital investments. With access to the right tools, they can leverage the same insights and projections used by financial professionals on Wall Street—whether it’s managing cash flow, forecasting profits, or making informed investment decisions.

FastForward Incubator: A Major Milestone

Their biggest leap came when SalaryTea was accepted into the prestigious Johns Hopkins FastForward Incubator, a highly selective nine-week accelerator program that offers structured guidance for student entrepreneurs through two tracks: Spark and Fuel. Spark focuses on early-stage ventures validating ideas, while Fuel supports companies ready to scale, offering workshops, mentorship, and workspace. At the end of the program, teams have the chance to pitch their business ideas at Demo Day, where they can win additional funding. SalaryTea benefited greatly from this program, receiving critical mentorship and access to resources that helped the company refine its business model and product offering.

Scaling with FastForward: Building the Future

Currently in the FastForward Incubator, SalaryTea is gaining the tools needed to scale its product to a broader audience. The incubator is not only providing funding but also helping Natalie and Racheal refine their business model, ensuring that their platform meets the needs of a growing market. With the backing of FastForward, SalaryTea is continuing to develop its Minimum Viable Product (MVP) with key financial forecasting tools, such as cash flow management, sales forecasting, and profit and loss analysis. These tools are designed to empower small business owners with real-time insights, helping them make better decisions about their business finances and plan for future growth.

A Bright Future for Financial Empowerment

SalaryTea’s participation in the FastForward Incubator has been a game-changer. The program is helping them sharpen their focus on scaling the business and leveraging the vast market of over 30 million small businesses in the U.S. By addressing the need for simple financial management tools, SalaryTea is well-positioned to become a go-to platform for entrepreneurs, freelancers, and small business owners across industries.

As SalaryTea continues to grow, Natalie and Racheal remain committed to the company’s grassroots origins. What started as a simple effort to help students and young entrepreneurs balance their budgets has evolved into a comprehensive platform designed to empower small business owners with the financial tools they need to succeed. With the continued support of the Johns Hopkins FastForward Incubator, SalaryTea is poised to bring its vision of financial empowerment to an even larger audience, helping businesses across the country achieve long-term financial stability and success while promoting economic equality through accessible, affordable financial solutions.
